FAQ: What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release addresses the fascia in the body.  Fascia is originally thought of as a “Saran-wrap” type covering all over the body, known as connective tissue, that connects muscle to muscle, muscle to bone, muscle to skin, etc. We use the analogy of a knit sweater: when there is a snag in one part of the sweater, it creates tension in other parts of the sweater, stretching and pulling the yarn in places that are rather distant to the original snag.  This is why your left shoulder pain may be coming from tight gluteal muscles on the right, which leads to tight hamstrings and then left knee pain and possibly ankle pain.  Thomas Myers has formulated Anatomy Trains, which describes these lines of myofascial tension throughout the body.
