Today is National Day of Persons with Disabilities. What does this day mean? Why do we celebrate it? What is the best way to help and support? Well I’m glad you asked!
The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The main programme of the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the UN Headquarters in New York will include panel discussions and cultural events. The UN’s theme for 2021 is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
The best ways to help is to advocate for accessibility in your communities. This can include but is not limited to, more wheelchair accessibility, elevators, more available seating and so much more.
How will you help your community?
