Understanding the "3 T’s": Thoughts, Trauma, and Toxins

In the world of chiropractic care, we use a simple idea called the "3 T’s" to understand why we feel pain or stress. These are the three main things that can knock our bodies out of balance and interfere with our nervous system.

When these stressors pile up, they can cause subluxations. This is a term for when your spine is out of alignment, creating tension and making it harder for your body to heal itself.

Thoughts

(Mental and Emotional Stress)

Your mind and body are deeply connected. When you deal with constant worry, anxiety, or heavy grief, your body reacts. It goes into "fight-or-flight" mode.

  • What happens: Your shoulders hunch, your breathing becomes shallow, and your muscles tighten—especially in your neck and back.

  • The shift: By practicing mindfulness and being kinder to yourself, you can actually help your physical muscles relax.

Trauma

(Physical Stress)

Trauma is any physical force that hurts the body. This includes big events and small habits:

  • Major Trauma: Car accidents, falls, or sports injuries.

  • Micro-Trauma: Poor posture at a desk, looking down at a phone, or sleeping in an awkward position.

  • The result: These stresses can cause joints to get stuck and muscles to pull unevenly, making it hard for your nerves to send clear signals to the rest of your body.

Toxins

(Chemical Stress)

Toxins are things that put a burden on your body’s internal systems. They can cause hidden inflammation and fatigue. Common sources include:

  • Processed foods, sugar, and caffeine.

  • Pollution and household chemicals.

  • Dehydration or certain medications.

  • The result: When your body is busy fighting off these chemicals, it gets tired. This can lead to stiff joints and a "clogged" feeling in your system.

How They Work Together

These three things are rarely separate. For example, if you have a physical injury (Trauma), it might make you feel anxious (Thoughts), which might make you crave unhealthy comfort food (Toxins).

Over time, this "triple threat" can leave you feeling stuck, tired, and in pain.
