October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month

What is Dysautonomia?
-This is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that effect the autonomic nervous system in our bodies. These are the systems that control your breathing, heartrate, blood pressure and more automatic systems.
-There are 15 types on Dysautonomia, ranging from effecting millions of people to effecting 350 people total.

What are the common types?
-The most common forms of Dysautonomia are Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

Who do these effect?
-Many triggers of them are unknown, but research indicates links between MS, Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and many other Autoimmune Disorders.

Why is this something we should care about?
-These are conditions that globally effect millions of people and have very little funding into research.
-Many forms of Dysautonomia come alongside other co-morbidities and lead to a very short outlook on someone’s life expectancy.
-There is no cure for any of these, no treatment. Patients with these issues work on symptom management as currently that is the only treatment available.

What can I do?
-Spread awareness by sharing posts like this one
-Donate to Dysautonomia International, or another fund toward research
